Sooo, on my last post, I mentioned my particular interest in the swapable M4 upper receivers between a 10” and a 14.5” barrel length and optic depending on METT-TC. I really admired that type of quick adaptability. I made an honest attempt but I came across several problems:
1.) Trying to find TWO metal upper receivers.
-I could not find a second that was in any sort of working condition. So instead, what I came up with was just using an M4 barrel extension from a ECHO 1 416.
2.) Selector switch
-The selector switch was made of plastic and the cam would constantly strip out. I found one made of metal. Doesn’t act sluggish anymore.
3.) Jamming constantly
-I really need to get my hands on better hop-up buckings and units. The hop-up unit is a one piece metal. The bucking is stock. I had to pull out the tightbore barrel because the bucking wasn’t getting a proper seal and jamming up. I put a CA 6.08 and it works marvolously.
Onto the rifles. The CQB was built out of a D-Boys M4 RIS CQB. I picked it up from a co-worker of mine for a good deal. I used some extra parts that I salvaged from the 416 to complete the externals. The gearbox was built from scratch. Yes, I do have a lot of spare upgrade parts laying around to build gearboxes. Are they very good? Not really. I need to get better at that. Shimming takes a lot of practice. But they still work. This one is mostly Deepfire and ICS. A lot of components were picked up from work. The first few weeks, the rifle was nothing but problems. Jamming, low compression, no back spin, sluggish selector. I almost scrapped the project, but I wanted this way too bad. In the end, I got it working and it was proven under fire to hold up for an entire day. The accuracy issue will be addressed in time, but for now, it will work. I gave it a paint job and a few mock up parts to look good. I run it on a 9.6v carried in the rear of the gun. The sight is cheap, but it looks good. I had to dig around in a box full of RIS accessories that UTG had sent us to find the riser, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to see over the front sight post. The back up sight is a chopped up carrying handle. ODA style LOL. Painting it was fun, keep your eyes open for future projects on that. The sling on it is a Blue Force Gear Vickers Sling. Donated by the US Army.
The second rifle is a KWA M4 RIS. Its very simple and straight forward. Its lipo ready and is incredibly reliable. I made a promise to myself NOT to tinker with this one. It will be left stock. I may toss a heavier spring in there and a better barrel, but that will be the extent of it. Right now, I have it set up for night fighting with the huge spotlight. it pushes 150 lumens. The sling is a Spec-Ops sling that was also donated by the US Army. The sight is a red dot made to look like an ACOG. I would eventually like to find an original ACOG Reflex sight to strap on the top. It does have a Marine Corp logo on the side and not KWA. This is simply because the gun is the Taiwanesse version purchased directly from the manufacturer and not through KWAUSA. I haven’t come up with a title other than Deployment kit. I would like to find a large Pelican case to haul both of them around in….
